Today would have been my late husband's 53rd birthday. As a birthday gift, I'm posting this poem. For all the laughs you gave me, babe, here's one in return. I thought you might enjoy the chuckle. Thank you . . . for everything. We've Grown Rather Tame, Mr. Natural _________________________________________________
I’m stuck in bed with a decrepit bag of Halls Mentho-Lyptus Ice Blue Peppermint lozenges, trying my damnedest to peel off the wrapper that has molecularly bonded with the medicated tablet. I claw at it pretty viciously for someone with a temperature of 102 degrees. You reminisce about the days we sold blotter back in the ‘60s. Rookies asked if they were supposed to suck off the acid and spit out the paper, terrified they might swallow a quarter-inch square of wood pulp and do some real damage. I forego the obsessive-compulsive paper picking, daringly suck on the Ice Blue Peppermint lozenge with shreds of wrapper still stuck to it. Mentho-Lyptus is always such a rush. Take a fevered chance. Ah, such is life for a paper pusher on the medicated edge of menopause. (In memoriam: MG Dec. 27, 1952 – Apr. 2, 2001)

I love the way this reads when I read it aloud and the way you follow the paper images all the way through the poem. Thanks for sharing this. Debbie Deborah P Kolodji www.livejournal.com/~dkolodji www.kolodji.com Editor, Amaze: The Cinquain Journal Amaze: The Cinquain Journal

This poem just tumbles into you and grows a smile. It's great to grow old and have memories to choose from and compare our states of being. I enjoyed this past trip very much! “Something sacred, that's what they want” -Jim Morrison. From the movie “The Doors.”

ah M you hit us with rolled Mentho-Lyptus and sealed humor. This is better than finding Black Cohosh under the tree! "such is life for a paper pusher on the medicated edge of menopause."

Medicated edge of menopause made me howl with laughter, M! I'm sure that's not the reaction you wanted from a reader but I couldn't help it. My mother is going through menopause and oh good gawd will I survive? It's a touching tribute. I enjoyed this, thanks very much. |

Thank you all very much, dear friends, for reading and responding. Glad I could make you all smile and laugh -- you made me smile really big in return with your comments. I'd have to say that the most important thing to my late husband was humor. He lived to make people laugh. So, I'm sure he's reading this and chuckling. Thanks for helping me make his birthday a happy one. It's the best gift we could all give.

Touching poem inviting us in to eavesdrop on the real language of lovers. I love poetry that pulls me along between emotional states, and this one did that well. The things that take us back! The sucking of cough drop paper image is one that will stick! ~Jennifer www.mannequinenvy.com

Dear jennifer -- so sorry I was so long in responding. I didn't realize you'd left a comment. I'm glad to know that you found this intimate and emotionally engaging. Thank you for telling me your thoughts. Sweet Dorothy -- yes, he was a force, wasn't he? There are just some people born larger than life -- he was one of them. As to the letters, just say what you wish in your head. He will hear and respond. With me, it's mostly through music. I nearly always get an answer if I listen closely enough. So, he's still writing letters; he's just using other people's words now. I believe he knows those who loved him are perceptive enough to understand the meaning. He communicates now as much as he ever did, just in a different way. He loved you so very much. Yes, the new Wild colors and format are most soothing, aren't they? Please give the majority of the credit to steve. He was the one who tried dozens of alternatives before we settled on this one. The man is tireless and very patient with me! *grin* Love Written on River Rocks, M |
